Top 3 Construction Site Safety Tips for 2020

Stonerise Construction has earned a reputation for integrity, quality, service and attention to detail for construction services in Southwestern Ontario. In keeping with these values, site safety is of the utmost importance to us at Stonerise, and we want to make sure you have the knowledge to keep yourself and your team safe while on site.

Here are the top 3 safety tips we’ve used to integrate safety into our business process and
ensure our team continues to lead the way with safety on our job sites:

1. Foster a workplace culture that encourages open dialogue.

Active communication is an important element of any team. Workers being able to communicate with their colleagues and managers on-site makes all the difference when trying to stay safe.

By encouraging your team to speak openly about health, safety and environmental concerns in the construction site, they’ll be more inclined to report hazards and identify other issues which may otherwise be missed.

On our sites, we’ve been able to accomplish this in a few ways. We have:

  • Health and safety inspectors and committees on call 24/7 to address safety issues as they arise. They complete daily/weekly job site inspections to minimize or alleviate unsafe work conditions and prevent workplace accidents. They also focus on problem-solving identified issues or situations and providing recommendations related to workplace practices/conditions and accident investigations.
  • Toured IHSA representatives around each construction site and routinely meet with IHSA in order to maintain meeting health and safety and Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB) requirements. Our health and safety inspector is also present during any Ministry of Labour or government inspections and ensures required documentation is posted as per IHSA.
  • Daily job hazard analyses (JHA) performed on all Stonerise Construction sites. This gives us a chance to maintain accurate records of daily work outlining each potential hazard.

2. Ensure you’re meeting safety training requirements.

Providing regular and effective training can help reduce and prevent future accidents on site. At minimum, all construction workers should be able to recognize safety hazards and know how to minimize them.

Every day at Stonerise, each employee must sign off on our daily JHA in order to confirm awareness of the hazard and procedures to follow if required. Not only does this help us keep a record of our work, but it reiterates the importance of thinking about hazards on a daily basis. Stonerise Construction takes a very active role in the construction process and this includes being on top of site safety through active supervision and coordination.

3. Protect your team with proper personal protective and life saving equipment.

Employers are responsible for providing all employees with eye, face and head protection to help protect workers from a number of safety hazards including falling objects, electrical shock, flying particles and more.

By providing necessary PPE to employees and maintaining the integrity of all equipment, employers can be sure that even if a minor accident were to occur on site, its impacts will be lessened.

We continue to follow and prioritize safety regulations to develop solutions for our construction community. By helping employees understand the importance of safety and providing them with guidance and support, we keep the wellbeing of our workers top of mind when it comes to safety on the job site — and it shows.

To our employees and future employees, we are part of a vision that continuously raises the bar when it comes to safety in the workplace. As a leader in construction management, we build communities in the safest way possible to achieve optimal success.
